2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Program, (SURP) at Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has established the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, (SURP) to allow undergraduate students to undertake short-term research at CUHK during the summer.

SURP is designed to enable students from all academic disciplines to develop research skills and knowledge in a chosen area of research, as well as prepare for postgraduate studies. Through participating in SURP, incoming students will spend approximately eight to ten weeks at CUHK to conduct research project under the supervision of a host supervisor.

  • Applicants must be registered full-time undergraduate students. Applicants should normally have completed three years of study prior to participating in the program.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing and their applications must be supported by a host supervisor at CUHK.
  • Applicants should provide a copy of his/her latest academic transcript and one support letter from a professor at the home institution.

SURP will take place from June 9 to August 15, 2014 for approximately eight to ten weeks.

CUHK's Office of Academic Links, (OAL) will register the selected students in a 3-credit IASP 4091 course entitled "Independent Research on International Studies II" to carry out a project under the supervision of a host supervisor. Students' participation in the program will be evaluated and a transcript will be issued to their home institution upon successful completion of the program. Credit will transfer back to Rensselaer upon approval. Selected students will have the opportunities to join orientation and cultural activities organized by OAL.

CUHK will attempt to place selected students in university-sponsored housing whenever possible. However, when such housing is not available, OAL will provide the students with reasonable alternatives, and will assist students as necessary. The students will be responsible for the housing cost, whether it will be on or off campus.

No tuition will be charged to the students. Students are responsible for making their own international and domestic travel arrangements and associated costs, as well as for expenses involving housing, meals, local transportation, personal expenses, passport, visa applications, travel and medical insurance, and all other general living expenses.

A list of project topics and host supervisors is now available on the SURP website. Applicants are required to complete an online application form and provide his/her latest transcript, as well as one support letter from a professor at the home institution in the application. Application must be submitted online on or before February 3, 2014.
